The Canon EOS C50 is a 7K full-frame Cinema EOS camera, and the smallest and lightest in Canon's cinema range at approximately 670 g (body only). It pairs Open Gate recording and internal Cinema RAW Light with an RF mount, and suits documentary, commercial and narrative work for solo operators and larger crews alike.

Open Gate and the 7K sensor

Open Gate recording uses the full 3:2 sensor area, so a single take can be reframed to 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1 in post without losing resolution. 4K is captured from the full 7K readout, and Full Frame, Super 35mm (crop) and Super 16mm (crop) modes let one body cover different lens sets.

Formats, frame rates and tonal range

Internal recording covers 12-bit Cinema RAW Light up to 7K 60p, along with XF-AVC, XF-AVC S and XF-HEVC S. Slow motion runs to 4K at 120p and 2K at 180p, and 2K at 120 to 180p in Full-frame mode crops the angle of view by approximately 12%. Base ISOs of 800 and 6400, Canon Log 2 and Canon Log 3 support grading, with Canon quoting 15+ stops of dynamic range in Full Frame and 16 stops in Super 35mm (crop). A 4K plus 2K crop dual recording mode captures a vertical or square version at the same time.

Autofocus, lenses and body

Dual Pixel CMOS AF II provides subject tracking and eye detection. RF lenses mount natively, with EF lenses via the EF-EOS R adapter and PL lenses via the PL-RF adapter, and 5-axis stabilisation works with supported lenses. The body has a 3.0-inch vari-angle touchscreen, 14 assignable buttons and an internal cooling fan, but no built-in ND filter or electronic viewfinder.

Media, connections and power

Recording goes to one CFexpress Type B card and one SD UHS-II card, with simultaneous recording to both. Connections include full-size HDMI Type-A output, a DIN timecode terminal, a 3.5 mm mic input, headphone output and USB-C, with two XLR inputs on the detachable handle unit. There is no SDI output or genlock. Power is an LP-E6P battery, Wi-Fi is built in and IP streaming supports SRT.
