Introducing the Sony FX5

Sony announced the FX5 this morning - a new full-frame body in the Cinema Line FX family, pitched at shooters ready to step up to a more capable cinema camera without jumping to a bigger rig. It's built around a 5K full-frame stacked Exmor RS sensor and the BIONZ XR2 processor with integrated AI processing, and comes two ways: ILME-FX5 with the XLR-H2 handle unit, or body-only as the ILME-FX5B.

The FX5 records 16-bit X-OCN RAW internally - no external recorder needed - with LT, C1 and C2 codecs to balance image quality, file size and workflow, plus Open Gate recording in X-OCN. Three base ISO settings (800, 4000 and 12800) and Dual Gain Shooting - a first for the FX series - keep noise controlled across varied light. The XLR-H2 handle adds two XLR/TRS inputs and up to 96 kHz/32-bit float audio across four channels, and Sony's LUT Library covers on-set monitoring and colour grading.

Worth knowing before you plan a shoot around the headline frame rates: 5K 120 fps and 4K 240 fps in X-OCN arrive with the V2.0 firmware, which Sony has pencilled in for August 2027 or later. Sony has also flagged post-launch updates adding 3:2 XAVC S-I recording with full-sensor readout, a vertical-shooting interface and a frame grab function.
