The SDI Expander 8x12G handles conversion in both directions simultaneously: eight independent channels of 12G-SDI convert to SMPTE-2110, while a separate set of eight SMPTE-2110 channels convert back to 12G-SDI, for sixteen channels of conversion inside one rack unit. That lets existing SDI equipment plug straight into a 100G IP system, or gives an existing switcher eight more inputs and eight more outputs on the network.

Network connections

The SMPTE-2110 side runs over two 100G QSFP28 Ethernet ports with full SMPTE-2022-7 protection switching, sending identical streams across two separate networks and rebuilding frame-perfect video from whichever packet arrives first. A separate 1G NMOS control port keeps IS-04 and IS-05 discovery traffic off the media network, with PTP v2 timing keeping everything in sync.

SDI handling

SDI rates run from 1.5G up to 12G with automatic HD and Ultra HD detection, and 3G-SDI level A and B signals are auto-detected on inputs and user selectable on outputs. Standards span 525i59.94 NTSC and 625i50 PAL through 720p, 1080i, 1080p and PsF up to 2160p60, processed as 10-bit 4:2:2 YUV with 16 channels of embedded audio carried on every SDI and IP stream.

Monitoring and reliability

A built-in 2.2 inch LCD and search dial let you scrub between inputs and check video, audio, standard and timecode from the front panel, backed by a speaker and 6.35mm headphone jack. Dual redundant AC power supplies keep the unit running, and the Blackmagic IP10 codec adds 2160p59.94 and 2160p60 as 2110 IP video.
