The Canon CN30x40 IAS J/R1 is the RF-mount version of Canon's CINE-SERVO 40-1200mm, a 30x ultra-telephoto zoom that reaches 1800mm with its built-in 1.5x extender. It's made for detailed capture of distant subjects in wildlife, live production and long-distance shooting, yet keeps the length and weight of Canon's CN20x50.
30x zoom and extender
The zoom runs 40-1200mm at T5.0 from 40 to 560mm and T10.8 at 1200mm. With the 1.5x extender in it becomes 60-1800mm, at T7.5 to 840mm and T16.2 at 1800mm, and the extender expands the Super 35 image circle to cover full-frame sensors. Minimum focus is 3.5 m.
Optics
Canon's optical design supports 8K capture with high resolution from centre to edge, and minimises focus breathing for consistent framing as focus changes. The 11-blade iris gives natural, circular bokeh, and the front diameter is 136 mm.
Digital drive unit
A new digital drive unit improves zoom and focus servo performance. It has three 20-pin connectors, one each for a zoom demand, a focus demand and virtual lens data, and a high-resolution 16-bit encoder outputs precise virtual data. The USB-C port outputs real-time lens data, imports user settings, takes firmware updates and accepts external power. With an external power supply such as Canon's PD-E2, zoom and focus servo speeds are faster. Servo zoom calibration holds the angle of view while focusing. The drive unit is removable for manual cinema control, with 0.8 and 0.5 pitch focus gears and 0.5 pitch zoom and iris gears.
RF mount
With supported cameras, the RF mount offers lens distortion correction and real-time metadata capture for virtual production and VFX workflows, and the lens is compatible with Canon's Virtual Production System. The RF version is approximately 437.2 mm long and weighs approximately 6.7 kg.
